Role Description:

The CEO at Union County General Hospital provides leadership, strategic guidance and management direction to all aspects of the hospital’s operations while ensuring compliance with Union County General Hospital's mission, vision, values, goals, strategic and business plan and applicable laws and regulations.


The CEO serves as the key resource to the Board and is accountable for safe, quality patient care, developing and managing to a financially sound annual operating budget and long-term capital expenditure plan, hiring and retaining qualified and productive staff, managing risk, leading performance improvement and maintaining effective relationships with the Board, medical staff, patients, employees, the community.


Candidates for the CEO role must thrive in the role of visible community leader and hospital spokesperson, and must have a passion for quality patient care, excel in physician engagement, productive hospital operations, financial stability and high performing employees.


A strong community focus calling for regular face-to-face communication with physicians, the community, the board, volunteers and staff is critically important; thus the CEO will need to live with his/her family in the Clayton, NM area.


Community Hospital Corporation currently has a management agreement with UCGH and this CEO will be a CHC employee.  Community Hospital Corporation is a tobacco-free employer.


Candidates will possess a graduate level degree in a healthcare related field such as an MHA/MBA/MPH/MS or a BS in a healthcare related field with a business related masters, or the equivalent in education and experience.


Prior Experience:
  • A healthcare executive with 5 or more years of progressively more responsible experience at the senior administrative level is required.
  • Experience in a similar-sized rural hospital is preferred.
  • Must have a track record of effective operational, financial, business development, quality improvement and strategic skills.
  • Must demonstrate superior communication skills with all stakeholders and a track record of proactively developing positive relationships with physicians, employees, Board members and community leaders.
  • Must have a record of building and maintaining successful physician relationships.
  • Must demonstrate success with community relations/marketing of a hospital to the community.
  • Must demonstrate a history of raising/maintaining high physician, employee and patient satisfaction scores.
  • A leadership style that builds and maintains relationships based on teamwork, trust, honesty, transparency, respect, genuineness, openness, visibility and accountability
  • A person of unquestioned integrity and moral character
  • An independent thinker who is comfortable working within a system
  • An executive who is goal and community-focused and an avid spokesperson for the hospital within the community and the region
  • Ability to be accountable for the consequences of decisions and actions; anticipates potential problems and addresses them proactively; sees things through to successful completion
  • Ability to listen and communicate effectively and with transparency both formally and informally to a wide variety of constituencies, ranging from individual physicians, community groups, employees, boards, volunteers, patients, business partners and system leadership
  • Ability to build consensus and support within a wide group of constituencies, ranging from members of the Board, to individual physicians to the senior management team, employees, volunteers and the community at large
  • Demonstrates an understanding and commitment to the core values of respect, integrity, stewardship and excellence
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of the healthcare-related issues facing rural community hospitals and the ability to craft solutions and thrive within the new and evolving world of healthcare
  • Ability to create a high performance culture and organizational climate in the hospital that encourages teamwork and inspires individual and organizational excellence
  • Possess sound and accurate judgment and timely decision making
  • Have proficient knowledge of all related acute care, legal, regulatory and financial requirements of a not-for-profit community hospital
  • Desire to live and work in a small remote town in New Mexico.
  • Ability to meet CHC’s Drug and Tobacco-Free requirements

About Union County General Hospital 


Union County General Hospital is a 25 bed critical access hospital located in northeast New Mexico.  It is supported by the County Commissioners and is the beneficiary of tax support from the county.

The hospital provides the following services; 24 hour ER, laboratory, inpatient care, pharmacy, rehabilitation facilities, radiology, surgical suite, endoscopy services and the Clayton Family Practice Clinic.
